02 WALK Exploring the Rhiws of the Black Mountains with Havard Prosser

The walk visits Rhiws – ancient drove roads crossing the Black Mountains Escarpment from the Wye valley. From Pengenffordd, we climb Rhiw Trumau, and then head north, crossing Waun Fach, and following the escarpment to Rhiw Cwmstab and Rhiw y Fan. After descending Rhiw Wen, we follow tracks and lanes to reach Talgarth.

05 WALK Artist's view of the Black Mountains with Frances St Clair Miller

From Talgarth up through Pwll y Wrach to the waterfall. Then up to Pen y Bryn and along the path below Y Das to Rhos Fawr, on to Rhos Fach then returning to Talgarth by different paths with several stiles to cross. We will pass a view of Mynydd Troed of which Frances made an etching. This will be on view in the Festival Hub.

A linear walk with the Brecon Beacons Park Society to hear about some of their work and to enjoy the western edge of the Black Mountains with great views over Llangorse Lake to the central Beacons. The route goes from Bwlch along a short section of the Beacons Way, over Cefn Moel, Mynydd Llangorse and Mynydd Troed, then down to Pengenffordd for a minibus back to Talgarth.

08 WALK with Brecknock Wildlife Trust around Llangorse Lake with John Crellin

The walk will take in the shoreline around the west of the lake including the new bird-hide and the flower-rich meadows adjoining. We will then join the Three Rivers Ride for a while to take in moderately high ground with the view of the lake and return via Llanfihangel Tal-y-Llyn Common onto Llangorse Common where the Lakeside Café awaits to refresh us while waiting for the return bus. The areas covered are rich in wild plants and flowers although it will be rather early for many of them. The exact flora varies from year to year. We will also be looking for signs of water-vole activity.

A gentle and interesting walk around Talgarth town, taking in the Tower House, St. Gwendoline’s Church, The Cider House, a former Squire’s House with a mounting stone in its garden, the Mill and a number of other notable buildings which have intriguing stories to tell. Should the weather prove inclement the walk will become a ‘virtual’ one, with an indoor PowerPoint presentation taking the audience around the town and into its buildings.

10 WALK Nordic Walking with Heather Maling

Nordic Walking Instructor and Chartered Physiotherapist, Heather Maling, will take you from complete novice to competent walker in a morning. Nordic Walking is described as enhanced walking, where the active use of specially designed poles is added to the natural walking pattern. Correct use of the poles integrates the upper body into the act of walking to propel the body forwards and upwards and enables you to walk uphill with less effort or walk faster or walk and talk! Nordic Walking poles provided, lightweight walking boots recommended. The event starts with some practice around a rugby field before moving to Rhos Fach Common.
